Quickplay Tournaments

Wantage Chess Club typically have two quickplay tournaments each year.

The first meeting of a new year is a quickplay tournament, with each player having 10 minutes to complete all their moves.

The last meeting of the season is also a quickplay tournament but with an added twist: the opening is chosen at random and all games in the round must start with that opening.

Quickplay (2 January 2018)

The first meeting of 2018 was a quickplay tournament organised by Peter Hemmings, with each player having 10 minutes for all their moves.

As is usual in quickplays, the games were lots of fun, noticable for the number of mistakes and frantic thumping of the clock as the time started running out.

My memorable games were the scraping of a draw against Roly after he got a piece up and started vacuuming up my queen-side pawns, and the frantic time scamble against Miroslawa; she had a winning attack but I thought I could run her out of time - unfortunately the reverse happened.

Worthy of mention is Noel.  Noel was the only junior present and, as such, was co-opted into the senior's tournament, although was outgraded by all his opponents.  Nevertheless, he played very well and even managed to get a piece up against Peter, although he unfortunatly returned it later in the game.

But overall, well done Miroslawa on coming first with a score of 5/6.
