Quickplay Tournaments

Wantage Chess Club typically have two quickplay tournaments each year.

The first meeting of a new year is a quickplay tournament, with each player having 10 minutes to complete all their moves.

The last meeting of the season is also a quickplay tournament but with an added twist: the opening is chosen at random and all games in the round must start with that opening.

New Year Quickplay (3 January 2017)

The New Year started off with the now-traditional New Year's quickplay tournament organised by Peter Hemmings.  Rules are:

  1. Each player has ten minutes.
  2. Touch move is not in force - a player can take back their move and make another one provided they do so before they press the clock.
  3. If a player leaves their king in check when they make their move, their opponent may take the king, winning the game.

We welcomed two visitors for this tournament, Phil Johnston and Jeppe Christensen.

The players were divided into two groups based on ECF grade.

Well done to Miroslawa, winning group 1 with a perfect 4/4.  The only person who came close to defeating her was Matt who at one point was a knight up with a strong attack.  Unfortunately, under time pressure he blundered his knight away and finally lost when his flag fell.

And congratulations to Steve Thompson on winning group 2 with a solid performance.
