The First Team lost their first away tie last night at the University, but we are at least moving closer to a positive result.

My game was over in 20 moves, and its quality would have disgraced two novices playing a casual game in a pub.  First I blundered a bishop on an open board.  Fortunately, White returned the favour  when I won the piece back with a knight fork.  Further exchanges left me two pawns up  and it was all over in half an hour when White resigned.

Martin lost a pawn, but I hoped he might hang on for drawing chances, but sadly this was not to be.  Also against strong opposition on board 2 , it was not to be Mirka's night either, though she contested things long and well.

I thought that Andy and Roly had promising positions but both went against us.   Roly lost a pawn in an ending with  rook and knight  each, and his opponent duly converted.  I think that Andy lost in complications

That left Peter in play.  He ended up with a rook but facing an armada. of pawns.  But he did not panic, was able to round all these up to win with a king plus rook versus king ( which we have been teaching our juniors).  So it was 4  -2 to the hosts.

However, we would probably not have been treating this match  as a potential win.   We may be able to do better when Univ 1 visit us in the return fixture when past experience indicates they may be a bit weaker.
